(1) MIT: New insights on fusion power

David Chandler, MIT News Office
December 3, 2008

Research carried out at MIT's Alcator C-Mod fusion reactor may have brought the promise of fusion as a future power source a bit closer to reality, though scientists caution that a practical fusion powerplant is still decades away.

(2)Disappearing superconductivity reappears -- in 2-D

Scientists studying a material that appeared to lose its ability to carry current with no resistance say new measurements reveal that the material is indeed a superconductor -- but only in two dimensions. Equally surprising, this new form of 2-D superconductivity emerges at a higher temperature than ordinary 3-D superconductivity in other compositions of the same material.

"Obtain quality 3D coordinates for your own chemical structures from the CORINA progam."[1]
"Enter a structure as SMILES string and an identifier in the form below and press the Submit button (or just use "alanin" for demonstration). CORINA will generate 3D coordinates for the given structure. A new page will be generated showing the 3D molecular model if you have RASMOL, CHIME, or some similar program installed on your computer). "[2]

"Substance Registry Services (SRS) is the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) central system for information about substances that are tracked or regulated by EPA or other sources. It is the authoritative resource for basic information about chemicals, biological organisms, and other substances of interest to EPA and its state and tribal partners.

The SRS makes it possible to identify which EPA data systems, environmental statutes, or other sources have information about a substance and which synonym is used by that system or statute. It becomes possible therefore to map substance data across EPA programs regardless of synonym.

The system provides a common basis for identification of, and information about:

  • Chemicals
  • Biological organisms
  • Physical properties
  • Miscellaneous objects"[1]
